How to Specify Industrial Fasteners for a Quote

Industrial self-drilling fastener

Fastener quotes become much more reliable when the request defines the actual thread, geometry, material or grade and finish rather than using only a general name such as “bolt.”

Identify diameter and thread

State the nominal diameter and thread pitch or threads-per-inch. Identify the thread standard when known. Do not assume a metric and inch thread are interchangeable because the diameter looks close.

Define length and head style

Fastener length measurement can depend on head type. Include the head and drive form and whether the fastener is fully or partially threaded.

State material and grade

If a drawing, equipment specification or standard calls for a specific grade, property class or stainless or alloy material, include it exactly.

State the finish

Plating, coating, passivation or other finish can affect corrosion behaviour, dimensions and procurement. If the finish does not matter, say so rather than letting the supplier guess.

Give quantity and packaging needs

Large quantities, kits, packaging, repeat usage and delivery timing can materially change the sourcing option and price.
